Once the basic physical needs of food, water, shelter, clothing and sanitation are met for humans in catastrophic
conditions, the needs of their minds, hearts and souls require attention.
Houston Area Musicians March for Evacuee Relief (HAMMER) intends to alleviate the suffering of those displaced
by disaster by using one of the most elemental aspects of human communication: music.
HAMMER was formed in response to the aftermath of hurricane Katrina which devastated Louisiana,
Mississippi
and Alabama, and our plan is to provide live music for the displaced victims of that storm who
have wound up
here in Houston.
In particular, New Orleans is a city with a long history of innovation that changed the face of music in America.
While it may not be as crucial as water, music is a huge part in the lives of every person on
this planet and is
an essential characteristic of New Orleans. As musicians who have shared the pleasure
of the New Orleans
musical experience, we want to give some of that happiness back to all those who have suffered from upheaval
and
destruction.
Since we have a world-class group of musicians in Houston, we want to share the joy of music with our brothers
and sisters of the Gulf Coast and do what we can to help begin the healing process.
